The Imperial City of Dah'Kalyn crowns the summit of Mount Aethern, where the ancient mountain meets the towering cliffs above the Maiden's Sea. It has served as the capital of the Empire of Xytheria since the earliest days of House Xytheris and remains the seat of the Imperial Throne. Historians widely agree that the city was founded not for commerce nor conquest, but because Mount Aethern was already revered long before the rise of the Empire. The mountain is believed to be one of the oldest places in the world, its heart steeped in celestial magic that predates recorded history. Among the Celestial Dragons it is said that Aethern does not simply rest beneath the heavens. It is connected to them. Many scholars believe the mountain acts as a vast conduit through which celestial energies flow into the world, making it the holiest site within Xytheria and the only place deemed worthy of an Imperial Palace.
The mountain has never surrendered all of its secrets. Beneath its slopes lies a labyrinth of caverns, forgotten halls, and immense passages that disappear far below the crust of the planet. Some bear the unmistakable marks of dragon craftsmanship while others are so ancient that no scholar has confidently attributed them to any known civilization. Strange tremors have echoed through the mountain for centuries, and there are chambers that even the Imperial Family forbids others from entering. Among the oldest legends is the claim that the first rulers of House Xytheris imprisoned an ancient celestial dragon beneath Mount Aethern, a being whose power rivaled the Celestine. Though the Imperial Court has never confirmed these accounts, the mountain's unusual magical properties and unexplained disturbances have ensured that the tale has never truly faded from memory.
The city itself was not built by masons, laborers, or conquered peoples. Dah'Kalyn was raised by the dragons of House Xytheris over many generations. Every Emperor and Empress was expected to contribute to its construction, shaping the capital through claw, flame, and celestial sorcery before ever claiming the Imperial Throne. To the dragons, building the capital was an act of devotion to both their ancestors and the Empire they would inherit. Each generation expanded the city while preserving the work that came before it, allowing Dah'Kalyn to grow into a living chronicle of the dynasty.
Nearly every structure within the Imperial District was fashioned from Aetherion, an exceedingly rare celestial stone found only within the deepest reaches of Mount Aethern. Formed where the mountain's ancient magic permeated veins of primordial crystal, Aetherion is among the strongest materials known to exist. It is exceptionally resistant to both physical force and hostile magic, readily binds powerful enchantments, and naturally amplifies protective wards woven into its surface. The walls of the Imperial Palace are therefore more than fortifications. They are an immense magical bulwark sustained by the mountain beneath them. It is commonly believed that so long as Mount Aethern endures, the heart of Dah'Kalyn shall remain unconquered.
The Imperial Palace occupies the mountain's highest summit, overlooking the Maiden's Sea from cliffs that have long protected the capital from invasion. Around it stretches the City of Dah'Kalyn, whose grand avenues, temples, academies, markets, noble estates, and military districts descend the mountainside in vast terraces before reaching the harbor below. The Imperial Household numbers approximately 9,400 permanent residents, including the Imperial Family, their retainers, scholars, commanders, priests, artisans, diplomats, and the Imperial Guard. Beyond the palace, the city is home to an estimated 1.9 million inhabitants, making Dah'Kalyn the largest city in the Empire and the center from which its laws, commerce, and diplomacy flow.
As the Empire expanded, so too did the responsibilities of House Xytheris. The dragons who had once shaped every stone gradually turned their attention toward governance, scholarship, diplomacy, and war. The countless daily tasks required to maintain the capital came instead to be performed by slaves drawn from conquered peoples and tributary races. They maintain the streets, gardens, halls, and estates of Dah'Kalyn, while the construction, restoration, and expansion of the Imperial Palace remain the exclusive privilege of House Xytheris. No other race has ever been permitted to alter the sacred heart of the capital.
